We have been working with Nauticus the past few years to bring the USS Wisconsin alive! The goal is to make each space accessible to the public so they can get a sense of what is was like during the Wisconsin’s active years at sea. After reviewing many photographs we were able to decipher how the famous warship looked during the Korean War. The newest project was revamping the Chief Petty Officer lounge, also commonly called the CPO lounge. This area is where Chief’s were able to rest and relax during down times by reading, playing games, or watching movies. The purpose of this space was to bring comfort to the sailors by providing couches and chairs, while adhering to strict military specifications. All the furniture had to be made out of aluminum and with fire retardant materials. We were able to take the existing, beat up furniture and make it look new again for this space. We also provided tables. The USS Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships ever built arrived at Nauticus on the downtown Norfolk waterfront on December 7, 2000. We have provided new port hole curtains, rack curtains, new sofas, artwork, awnings, table covers, chairs, and carpet. Next time you are in Norfolk, VA, make sure to go take a tour of the USS Wisconsin!

Revamping The USS Wisconsin
The USS Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships ever built arrived at Nauticus on the downtown Norfolk waterfront on December 7, 2000. It has been open to the public since then, providing tours of the main deck and a few spaces. However, Nauticus wanted the people to see more of the ship and what it was like to live on the ship. They then called Davis Interiors and we were happy to help!
The museum’s directors wanted the ship to look alive, as if it was still an active warship. Our team at Davis Interiors spent many hours going through each department on the ship to come up with ways to revamp the spaces. The most important thing was to keep the integrity of the ship intact. We only designed spaces to show how they would have looked during the ship’s active time in the Korean and Gulf Wars.
We made and provided new port hole curtains, rack curtains, new sofas, artwork, awnings, table covers, chairs, and carpet. We focused on even the smallest details to ensure the ship looked top notch! We used only shipboard approved materials to create all the shipboard furniture we supplied. The sofas were made out of aluminum and fire retardant foam. The curtains in the XO’s stateroom and in the berthing racks were all made out of 100% Nomex. Nomex is a flame retardant material used in every ship in the Navy.

Berthing Lounges Get Upgraded!
Custom shipboard furniture for berthing lounges.
Davis Interiors recently manufactured and installed over 90 custom sofas, chairs, and tables onboard the USS Lincoln. Various berthing lounges were upgraded with shipboard furniture for sailors to have a space to sit and relax comfortably, while out to sea.
Davis Interiors manufactures all furniture out of aluminum following NAVSEA’s standards.
Our goal is to create furniture that is both appealing and efficient to the sailors.
The sofas and chairs were created by welding aluminum frames then upholstering them in the ship’s choice of fabric. Navy blue vinyl material was used on these sofas and chairs, due to vinyl’s durability and easiness to clean. The tables are also made with aluminum frames and then powder coated and laminated. The USS Lincoln choose the laminate color, but Davis Interiors has over 100 different laminate colors and textures to choose from.
Our furniture is built for high traffic spaces and is able to withstand multiple deployments.

100% Shipboard Approved Rack Curtains
Davis Interiors manufactures 100% shipboard approved curtains for berths, racks, portholes using Nomex materials. We use an innovative track and slider tape system for shipboard rack curtains. This slider tape ensure curtains are hung properly and look neat and uniform. The slider tape prevents drooping and gaps in the curtain at the top.
We make curtains to fit your needs with add-ons such as, fan cut-outs, snaps, black-out lining, and even pockets! With our black-out lining and pockets, sailors can enjoy a little bit of luxury while out to sea. Our black-out lining blocks the bright lights in the berths and our pockets give sailors extra storage space in their racks.
Our track is made with an aluminum alloy 6063 T5 anodized clear finish. The tape along the edge of the curtain slides into a thin opening in the track, which can be made to fit the length of any bunk. Slider tape eliminates the need for pins or hooks.
Davis Interiors, Ltd. also provides steel tubing and welding services to install the framework necessary for top bunk berth curtains.
Nomex Berth curtains are available in various sizes and colors. We have standard panels (40″ by 22″) in stock for fast, convenient shipping. Custom sizes or unique colors are made to order in a timely fashion and we can ship worldwide.
Designing a Cool and Casual Dining Room
We had the pleasure of designing and transforming a family dining room. The original room was very traditional with mahogany finishes, an oriental rug, and earth tone colors. Since this is not their formal dining room, the client wanted something that felt casual and comfortable. We wanted to use bright and calming colors in this space, to give a peaceful, tranquil vibe. To do this, we first painted the trim and wainscot white and the walls a soft blue. We used Benjamin Moore’s Alabaster OC-219 and Soft Sky 807.
We brought in a faux bamboo dining table and chairs to replace the existing mahogany table. We upholstered the chairs in Kravet’s Chromis- Reflection fabric. I loved the subtle design in the fabric. We didn’t want something too loud, but we didn’t want a solid. Solids on a dining chair will show to many stains! This fabric also had the blues, white, and silver tones we needed.
There is only one window in this room and we went with a tailored valence and sheer panels. A tailored valence looks neat and clean. I used Greenhouse fabric Hydrangea B6515, since it had the blues and silver tones to compliment the chairs. I bought extra fabric to make throw pillows for the two benches and chair we put in the room as well.
We chose a neutral sea grass rug, as it helped finish the casual look we were going for. This type of carpet is also great for high traffic areas because of its durability.
I love this way this room turned out. The final design and decor is modern with a classic charm.
