We have been working with Nauticus the past few years to bring the USS Wisconsin alive! The goal is to make each space accessible to the public so they can get a sense of what is was like during the Wisconsin’s active years at sea. After reviewing many photographs we were able to decipher how the famous warship looked during the Korean War. The newest project was revamping the Chief Petty Officer lounge, also commonly called the CPO lounge. This area is where Chief’s were able to rest and relax during down times by reading, playing games, or watching movies. The purpose of this space was to bring comfort to the sailors by providing couches and chairs, while adhering to strict military specifications. All the furniture had to be made out of aluminum and with fire retardant materials. We were able to take the existing, beat up furniture and make it look new again for this space. We also provided tables. The USS Wisconsin, one of the largest battleships ever built arrived at Nauticus on the downtown Norfolk waterfront on December 7, 2000. We have provided new port hole curtains, rack curtains, new sofas, artwork, awnings, table covers, chairs, and carpet. Next time you are in Norfolk, VA, make sure to go take a tour of the USS Wisconsin!
